The longer we spend picking technology, crafting a plan and refining a solution, the higher the chances it will be outdated and irrelevant by the time we put it into action. There is no pause button for progress, so it’s important you don’t fall into the trap of overplanning. Mike Tyson once said, "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face." This statement holds especially true when it comes to the fast-paced world of technology. They may not like it, but at least this way, they can prepare. So be frank and let leaders know when things are going to get rough. There is no plan on Earth that will get around these realities. Systems will go down, things will break and unforeseen issues will cause delays. Tech modernization is a marathon during which you can expect more than a few obstacles. This means you must be upfront and clear about expectations. You need to have buy-in from leadership to help you manage the business’s expectations and support you when you make a tough call. It’s long, tedious, expensive and full of challenges. Don’t set the wrong expectations with leadership. Knowing these benefits won’t make the transition easier, but it will make it smoother. People are more willing to go along with change when they understand how it will improve their jobs. As experts, it’s our job to pick the best tools for the work, but it’s also our responsibility to ensure they are accessible to everyone who needs them. One thing you absolutely must do is make the benefits of new technology clear, especially to leadership.
